About the event

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council, discussing economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights and will meet between 9 and 20 May in New York.

The special theme of the 2016 session will be conflict, peace and resolution. In addition Member States and indigenous peoples representatives will come together to review the actions taken to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as well as the role of indigenous peoples in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and in addressing climate change. Other important themes include the alarming rate of indigenous youth suicide, follow-up to the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples and the newly developed United Nations System-wide action plan to promote the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The session will also feature a dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
