Background: In November 2008, the UN Forum on Forests convened an open-ended ad hoc expert group to develop proposals for the development of a voluntary global financial mechanism/portfolio approach/global financing framework in Vienna, Austria (see background information below). At this meeting, experts recognized the need for more discussion on the issue. In particular, experts recommended that members States provide written contributions to support further elaboration of the proposals (see below) and also recommended that opportunities be sought to conduct additional meeting(s) on the sidelines of other forest-related events, including the 19th session of the Committee on Forestry of the Food and Agriculture Organization taking place in Rome from 16 to 20 March 2009. In this regard, a consultation meeting is being held in Rome from 12 to 13 March at the FAO Headquarters, to further the work of the UNFF expert group. Participation by all Member States is welcome to this meeting.
Limited funds are available for to support participation for a maximum of five participants from each of the five UN regional groups, equaling a total of 25 participants. This travel support does not include an air ticket, only a maximum of 4 (four) days of daily subsistence allowances at the established UN rate.
All travel support requests should be made by national authorities through their Permanent Missions to the UN in New York. It is expected that the Permanent Missions will communicate the request to the Chair of their respective UN regional group.
The Chairs of the UN regional groups were requested to inform the UNFF Secretariat of their decision on which participants from their regional groups are being nominated to receive the travel support by the deadline of 20 February 2009.
