Business Sector engagement in the Financing for Development Process

In the Monterrey Consensus Heads of State and Government decided "to strengthen and make fuller use of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, as well as as the relevant intergovernmental/governing bodies of other institutional stakeholders, for the purposes of conference follow-up and coordination".

Accordingly, two intergovernmental meetings currently serve as the main focal points for the Financing for Development follow-up process:

  1. The annual Special High-level Meeting of the Economic and Social Council with the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Trade Organization and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
  2. The biennial General Assembly High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development

The General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/58/230 also calls on the Financing for Development Office:

  1. "To organize workshops and multi-stakeholder consultations, including experts from the official and private sectors, as well as academia and civil society, to examine issues related to the mobilization of resources for financing development and poverty eradication; and"
  2. "To convene activities involving various stakeholders, including the private sector and civil society, as appropriate, to promote best practices and exchange information on the implementation of the commitments made and agreements reached at the International Conference for Financing for Development;"

The Monterrey Consensus of the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development called for a follow-up international conference to review the implementation of the Consensus (para. 73). In its resolution 62/187 of 19 December 2007, the General Assembly decided that the Follow-up International Conference to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus will be held in Doha, Qatar, from 29 November to 2 December 2008.
