3. Mandate role of above mechanism/council: The Environment Protection Council was established in October 1992 to
promote and coordinate environmental activities; the Ministry of Population and Environment was established in September
1995 to also promote and coordinate the implementation of environment and sustainable development policy of the country.
The actual implementation is in the hands of the government, public administration, industry, private sector as well as
citizens. Therefore the role of the Ministry is to ensure the translation of policy and programs into action from various line
agencies through developing regulatory and facilitative mechanisms. It shall also monitor the enforcement and compliance of
other environmental requirements.
