Good Environmental Practice in the Hotel Industry

Location Worldwide.
Responsible organization(s) Cooperation developed between UNEP/IE and two main industry associations:the International Hotel Association (IHA) and the International Hotel Environment Initiative (IHEI).
Description Joint publications (Action Pack, Case Studies) widely disseminated to governments, hotel associations, and on sale for hoteliers.
Dissemination of information through the industry association magazine "Green Hotelier".
Joint regional workshops of hotel associations.
Participation of UNEP/IE as the Judging Authority in the annual environmental award of the International Hotel Association.
Issues addressed Importance and methods for taking into account environmental aspects in siting and design of hotels.
Methods and practices to reduce the use of natural resources (energy, water,etc.) in hotel management.
Methods and practices to reduce liquid and solid wastes and emissions in hotel management.
Use of environmental management tools in the hotel industry.
Objectives To raise awareness of governments, hotels associations and of hoteliers,specially SMEs, on sustainable development and management of the hotel industry.
Results achieved Action Pack adopted and/or translated in several countries.
Environmental management of hotels high on the agenda of an increasing number of governments, hotel associations and hoteliers.
Follow-up activities launched by partners in several regions and, in particular, Asia, Pacific and the Caribbean.
Lessons learned Some approach would also be useful for other types of tourism facilities and Congress Centers and Visitors Centers.
Financing Small initial co-funding of UNEP/IE and International Industry Associations.
Self financing of further activities: sales of publications, participation of regional industry associations, translations and adaptations by national industry associations
