| Description | The programme is an integrated, multidisciplinary, community-based approach to addressing the multivarious problems confronting the municipal fishers. Programme components include organizing, research, human resource development, livelihood development, advocacy and networking. | |
| Issues addressed | Protection and rehabilitation of coastal resources. Community participation in the management and control of their resources. Ensuring the access of small fishers to municipal fishers. Improvement of socio-economic conditions of small fishers. | |
| Objectives | The programme aims to build the capacity of coastal communities to manage their resources in order to address the problems of poverty, environmental degradation and political marginalization | |
| Results achieved | Increase in catch and diversity of fish caught; elimination of dynamite and cyanide fishing and enhancement of coastal resources. | |
| Lessons learned | Coastal communities are capable of managing their resources if given the necessary support and mechanisms. Direct beneficiaries of a given research should be given the task of managing it. | |
