   Role of the regional commissions in supporting actions and
policies of the Commission on Sustainable Development and in the
global implementation of Agenda 21**

Unofficial summary:

The paper reports on the activities of the five regional economic
commissions which have been entrusted with the technical
assistance to countries on the implementation of Agenda 21.  Each
regional commission encompasses a world region characterized by
different levels of economic, social and political development:
Europe. Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean,
Africa, Western Asia.

The role of the RCs is to promote discussions and comprehension
of relevant issues and priority areas of Agenda 21, to support
UNDP capacity-building programs, environmentally sound and
sustainable development, transfer of technologies and to
strengthen inter-regional and regional cooperation.
