Environmental Peacebuilding for Sustainable Development in Africa

Background:

The project “Environmental Peacebuilding for Sustainable Development in Africa” seeks to improve awareness and capacity of conflict-affected countries to use their natural resources in ways that support stabilization, peacebuilding and statebuilding while mitigating economic, social and environmental risks. Maximizing the peacebuilding potential of natural resources while mitigating risks is an emerging discipline known collectively as environmental peacebuilding.

The project will focus on building the capacity of a wide range of stakeholders in three target African countries to document, share and apply good national and international practices on environmental peacebuilding.  It will engage these stakeholders in the Environmental Peacebuilding Community of Practice and support their sharing of lessons learned into the global Knowledge Platform. The project will help define national priorities on environmental peacebuilding and provide technical assistance on specific priority areas as defined by key stakeholders. It will serve as a catalyst for action, for enhancing south-south cooperation, and for building more durable peacebuilding processes using natural resources. Ideally, the practices and lessons documented by the project will have relevance in other conflict affected countries and will have the potential to shape UN policies and practices on maximizing the peacebuilding potential of natural resources.

Objective:

Strengthen capacity of project partner countries in Africa to document, share and apply good national and international practices on using natural resources and the environment to contribute to stabilization and peacebuilding.

Expected accomplishments:

  • Increased information sharing, documentation and awareness of national and international good practices on environmental peacebuilding and engagement in the global Community of Practice and Knowledge Platform on Environmental Peacebuilding among policy makers and other stakeholders in project partner countries in Africa.
  • Enhanced capacity of policy makers and other stakeholders in target countries to understand and integrate lessons learned and good practices on using natural resources and the environment for stabilization and peacebuilding into relevant policies and programmes.

Implementation status:

In progress.
