Activities for the implementation of the Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development Project

Background:

The promotion of the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and the Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development, is a priority of the UN. The Copenhagen Declaration and the Programme of Action of the Summit invites Governments to further strengthen and/or establish broad-based participatory national and local mechanisms for implementation and follow-up based on partnerships of Governments (including local government), non-governmental organizations, citizens, professional groups and the private sector.

Objective:

Strengthened national capacities to undertake programme design, monitoring and evaluation of programmes and projects in support of the goals of the World Summit for Social Development (WSSD) as further detailed by the 24th session of the GA.

Effects and Impact:

Training workshops on gender mainstreaming, computer application, conflict management, poverty eradication and local governance, have promoted cooperation among the participants from the regions concerned and provided the knowledge and understanding to respond to the WSSD commitments. Regional strategies have also been formulated to bring policies, programmes and projects closer to the WSSD commitments.
