POVERTY

Decision-Making: Coordinating Bodies

The Ministries of Environment, Health and Labour, Local administration, Petroleum, Agriculture, Irrigation, Housing, Electricity, and Economy and the Central Bureau of Statistics work on poverty issues.

Programmes and Projects

There is a National Programme for Combating Poverty which, with the help of the UN, promotes sustainable living conditions and rural development, and undertakes actions for reversing immigration from cities to rural areas.

HEALTH

Decision-Making: Coordinating Bodies

Health issues are the responsibility of the Ministries of Irrigation, Health, Labour, Housing, Tourism, and Local Administration. 

Decision-Making: Strategies, Policies, and Plans

Syria's activities are concentrated on the following:

• making primary medical care available especially in rural areas;
• monitoring and prevention of communicable diseases;
• challenges of environmental safety in urban areas;
• reduction of pollution risks.

EDUCATION

Decision-Making: Strategies, Policies, and Plans

At present, the Ministry of the Environment has begun to implement a National Strategy on Education. One of its aims is to raise public awareness through media, seminars, workshops. and through working groups, etc. Since there are no NGOs working in this field yet, the Ministry of the Environment has taken a leading role in this respect.

HUMAN SETTLEMENTS

Decision-Making: Coordinating Bodies

The Ministries of Irrigation, Health, Labour, Housing, Tourism, and Local Administration work on settlement issues. 

Decision-Making: Strategies, Policies, and Plans

Syria is concerned with the following issues:

• making available suitable shelters for its citizens;
• development of human settlements administration through urban administration and by improving information systems as well as developing sustainable land-use practices;
• making available water and discharge infrastructure and solid waste administration;
• building capacity of human settlements development.
