United to end the violence against women

"Break the silence. When you witness violence against women and girls, do not sit back. Act."
Ban Ki-moon, Secretary - General

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon
Men must teach each other that real men do not violate or oppress women – and that a woman’s place is not just in the home or the field, but in schools and offices and boardrooms.

Tura Lewai

Tura LewaiTura Lewai is a youth advocate and a democracy activist in Fiji. He was part of the Pacific delegation that attended the Rio Global symposium in 2009 for Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality. Since then, he has been actively supporting work to end violence against women in Fiji and other countries in the Pacific in a variety of ways.

As a Gender and Arts Officer in the Foundation of the South Pacific People International, he has integrated efforts to engage men and boys to end violence against women in a programme called ‘Stepping Stones’ and over the years has come up with innovative ideas to introduce the programme to the communities through theatre, drama and singing. He is also part of the drama group Dynamic Vocals, which uses theatre and an a capella crew to communicate powerful messages on rape and violence against women as a means of encouraging behavioural and attitudinal changes in communities.

Through training offered by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, he has also become a male advocate for women’s human rights. He has also undergone training and information-sharing with Partners For Prevention (P4P), a UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNV regional joint programme for Asia and the Pacific that provides new knowledge and technical support to prevent gender-based violence in the region.

While he says he still has a lot to learn, he is eager to investigate further about methods of primary prevention. He is very passionate about this and hopes to influence the different spheres that he works in to ensure that the generation of young people that become leaders in the future will advocate for the elimination of violence against women and live in a world free of violence.
