Kalyan Shrestha

Justice Mr. Kalyan Shrestha has been continuously serving as a Justice of the Supreme Court in Nepal since 2005. He started his professional career as a Judicial Officer in 1977, and was appointed District Judge from 1979 to 1983. He served in the Ministry of Law and Justice until 1985, and was a Judge in various Zonal Courts and Courts of Appeals of the country. He also served as first Executive Director of National Judicial Academy of Nepal in 2004.

Justice Shrestha has been rendering numerous judicial pronouncements in the areas of human rights, gender justice, environmental justice, judicial reforms, mediation, juvenile justice, good governance, and constitutional disputes. His contribution on gender justice includes directive orders for maintaining privacy on specialized nature of cases, invalidating discriminatory legal provisions declaring them ultra vires with constitution, and issuing directive orders on public interest litigations.

Off the bench, he is also active on different research and academic activities, including Draft on Penal Code, Penal Procedure Code and Sentencing Policy. He worked as a Co-author of Constitutional Law of Nepal (1997) and The Constitution of Nepal and its Analysis (1996). In 2006, he acted as Coordinator of Publication Committee of Fifty Years of the Supreme Court of Nepal.
