José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero

Born on 4 August 1960 in Valladolid, Spain, José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero graduated in Law from the University of León, where he began his career as a lecturer in Spanish Constitutional Law.
In 1986, when he was just 26 years old, Mr. Rodríguez Zapatero became Spain’s youngest ever Member of Parliament when he was elected from the province of León on the ticket of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, PSOE. Rising through the ranks of the PSOE over the course of the next decade, he led the party to victory in the Spanish elections in March 2004 and was elected as Prime Minister the following month. He was returned to serve a second term in 2008.
Mr. Rodríguez Zapatero’s government has prioritized women’s issues, introducing laws to promote gender equality and to prevent domestic violence.
