The Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) will hold a special meeting on the theme of prevention of terrorism from 19 to 21 April 2011 at the Council of Europe’s headquarters in Strasbourg, France.
International, regional and subregional organizations will be invited to join members of the Security Council and the Council of Europe in discussing preventive policies and measures. Counter-terrorism bodies and relevant civil society groups will also participate in the special meeting of the CTC. The three main sessions will focus on prevention policies, comprehensive and integrated strategies, and the role of law enforcement in preventing terrorism.
Participants in the upcoming meeting will share good practices that the Committee and its Executive Directorate can use in their work with international, regional and subregional organizations.
Hardeep Singh Puri, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, will open the special meeting with Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, and Mike Smith, head of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate.
The keynote addresses will be delivered by Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Muhammad Ben Ali Koman, Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Ministers of the Interior, and Ertuğrul Apakan, on behalf of the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
Previous special meetings of the CTC were held in New York, Washington D.C., Vienna, Almaty and Nairobi. These events served to enhance cooperation among the many actors engaged in assisting States in their efforts to build capacity against terrorism.
