The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was observed this year at UN Headquarters on 27 May. To mark the Day, a posthumous medal ceremony was held at 11:00 a.m. in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium to honour 115 UN peacekeepers who died in the course of their duties during the year 2004. The medals were presented to the Ambassadors or their representatives of the Permanent Missions of the deceased personnel. Later in the day, at 2:30 p.m., on the Promenade outside the Visitors Entrance at 46th Street and First Avenue, a medal parade was held at which those military and civilian police officers seconded for service within DPKO who had completed 90 days of service at UN Headquarters received UN service medals. In the absence of Under-Secretary-General Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Assistant Secretary-General Jane Holl Lute presided over the ceremonies.

DPI arranged for the photo and TV coverage of both events which were very well attended. Prior to the observance of the Day, its details were announced at the noon briefing by the Spokesman of the Secretary-General and a press release was issued. On the occasion of the Day, the Secretary-General issued a special statement which was translated in all official languages and sent, along with the press release, to all peace missions and DPI's field information offices. In addition, DPI prepared a comprehensive information kit for the observance and launched a special web site containing information and links relevant to the Day. Special memorial panels with the names of UN peacekeepers who lost their lives in 2004 were also produced and displayed at UN Headquarters.
