Consolidating stability, enhancing a culture of democratic governance and facilitating political dialogue

UNMIT—a multidimensional, integrated UN peacekeeping operation— was established by Security Council resolution 1704 PDF Document of 25 August 2006 in the wake of a major political, humanitarian and security crisis which erupted in Timor-Leste in April-May 2006. Among other things, UNMIT has been mandated to support the Government in “consolidating stability, enhancing a culture of democratic governance, and facilitating political dialogue among Timorese stakeholders, in their efforts to bring about a process of national reconciliation and to foster social cohesion”.

UNMIT has replaced the UN Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) which in turn was the latest in a series of successive United Nations operations or missions deployed in this country beginning in 1999.
