Brief history of the office


2009/2010 Regional Branches commence their work.
1 January 2009 The UNHCR Mediator is re-titled UNHCR Ombudsman.
21 April 2008 Mr. Johnston Barkat is appointed at the level of Assistant Secretary-General to head the new integrated ombudsman and mediation office.
6 February 2008 The General Assembly, by its resolution 62/228, establishes the new system of administration of justice at the United Nations, including the strengthening of the Office of the United Nations Ombudsman by creating (a) a single, integrated and geographically decentralized Ombudsman structure that serves the Secretariat, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNOPS and UNHCR; (b) a Mediation Division to provide mediation services; and (c) regional offices.
28 July 2006 The report produced by the Redesign Panel (A/61/205) contains far-reaching recommendations on key processes and structures within the formal and informal justice systems.
2006 UNICEF joins the Office of the Joint Ombudsperson for UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS with the appointment of Ms. Veronica Luard.
2 October 2004 By its resolution 59/283, the General Assembly requests the Secretary-General to establish a panel of external and independent experts, the Redesign Panel, to review and reshape the United Nations informal justice system.
2002 - 14 July 2007 Ms. M. Patricia Durrant serves as the first United Nations Ombudsman for the Secretariat at the level of Assistant Secretary-General.
June 2002- March 2007 Mr. James Lee serves as the first Joint Ombudsperson of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS.
15 October 2002 The Office of the Ombudsman is established by Secretary-General Bulletin ST/SGB/2002/12.
June 2002 The Office of the Joint Ombudsperson for UNDP, UNFPA, and UNOPS is established by the Executive Heads.
1993 Ms. Anne Marie Demmer is appointed the first UNHCR Mediator.
