Remember the Fallen

Darfur, 5 April 2011

Isatu Agnes Bangura, 1959 - 2011

Isatu Agnes Bangura

Isatu Agnes Bangura, a national of Sierra Leone, worked as a Family and Child Protection Officer for the Africa Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

She joined UNAMID in May 2009, and died on 5 April in a shoot-out with suspected carjackers in Northern Darfur while serving the Mission.

To her friends, Isatu was fondly known as Mama Born Again, and was well respected for her work ethic. A friend said, “She served the Mission with all her might,” and was often called upon to help with additional functions such as administration and logistics because of her experience and knowledge.

A Police Officer by training, Isatu started her career with the Sierra Leone Police Force in 1980, and rose to the rank of Inspector. She served in various divisions of the police force including the Special Branch Headquarters, and the Central Police Division. She also worked as Confidential Secretary for the Regional Police Commissioner of Freetown.

Isatu is survived by three daughters.
