President Ashe meets with Mr. Yury Fedotov, UNODC
The President of the General Assembly met today with Mr. Yury Fedotov, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). They exchanged views on the linkages between transnational organized crime and development. They also explored opportunities to promote a High-level focus on the impact of crime on development, including the PGA’s participation in the creation of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, to be held in Qatar in 2014.
The PGA proposed that crime prevention and criminal justice could be incorporated into one of his planned High-level thematic debates on Ensuring Stable and Peaceful Societies. Mr. Fedotov indicated that he and his team will consider this possibility.
The Director also informed the PGA of final efforts underway to re-open a regional UNODC office in the Caribbean.
