Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with Mr. Joan Clos, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat)

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Joan Clos, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). The Executive Director expressed his gratitude to President Ashe for his presentation at World Habitat Day
The Executive Director discussed preparations leading up to Habitat III in 2016, including the World Assembly of Mayors; a Ministerial Meeting of Latin America and the Caribbean with UN-Habitat, to be held in New York in December this year, and the Seventh Session of the World Urban Forum to be held in Medellin, Colombia in 2014.
President Ashe and Mr. Clos shared views on the role of urbanization in the overall sustainable development agenda, the challenges of contemporary urbanization and the need for leadership in pioneering a new sustainable urbanization model. The Executive Director stressed the important role of local policymakers in this regard. Both concurred that urbanization is at a critical moment.
The Executive Director requested the support of the President of the General Assembly in the preparatory process, during the President’s term of office, leading up to Habitat III in 2016.
