Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh. Dr. Chowdhury highlighted the importance of the annual Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meetings held in New York.
Dr. Chowdhury discussed the Eighth Meeting of Women Speakers of Parliament, organized by the IPU and held on 12 and 13 November 2013, which covered gender equality in sustainable development and noted the important exchanges and insights received on best practices and lessons learned.
Dr. Chowdhury commended President Ashe for his remarks to the IPU opening plenary and his emphasis on gender equality and inclusiveness. She described the measures Bangladesh has taken to encourage women's participation in the electoral process including by way of a quota system.
