Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with Mr. Pietro Grasso, President of the Senate of the Italian Republic

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Pietro Grasso, President of the Senate of the Italian Republic. They discussed the priorities of the sixty-eighth session on “setting the stage” for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Senate President Grasso expressed his appreciation of the chosen theme for the sixty-eighth session, noting the importance that Italy’s Senate attaches to economic, social and environmental development as well as human rights and further noted the important role of Parliamentarians in this context.
Senate President Grasso underscored that the rule of law is at the root of development and extended the full support of the Italian Senate to the President of the General Assembly.
President Ashe, in welcoming the Senate President’s support, encouraged the active participation of the Senate President during the sixty-eighth session and in particular, during key thematic events. Senate President Grasso expressed his gratitude for the information and shared that the initiatives of the President of the General Assembly resonated with Italy’s own priorities in respect of the environment, equal rights for women and youth employment.
