President Ashe meets with Mr. Achim Steiner, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Achim Steiner, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Discussions covered a range of topics, including the Global South-South Development Expo (GSSD), the green economy in the context of sustainable development and the Post-2015 Development Agenda, and the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Mr. Steiner expressed his appreciation of President Ashe’s participation in the Global South-South Development Expo and noted the success and positive outcomes of the week-long Expo held in Nairobi and hosted by UNEP.

Mr. Steiner noted the importance and high interest around the world when it comes to the green economy and expressed the need for a new phase in capacity building programs that incentivise new policy and financing to better promote sustainable development.

President Ashe took the opportunity to inquire of UNEP's participation and involvement in the upcoming 2014 SIDS Conference. Mr. Steiner noted that UNEP is strongly committed to this event and is working hard to ensure UNEP's meaningful input to both the process and the substance of the Conference.
