PGA John W Ashe with Margareta WahlstromThe President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Ms. Margareta Wahlström, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action.

They discussed initiatives of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) aimed toward a mutually reinforcing agenda for disaster risk reduction, climate change and sustainability. In this context, they addressed the issue of loss and damage, UNISDR’s support for the development of disaster loss databases, and the United Nations Plan of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience.

Ms. Wahlström noted the work that her office is undertaking in preparation for the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in Sendai, Japan in March 2015, where a new framework is expected to support enhanced safety and resilience.

They discussed the prospects for the Post-2015 Development Agenda to integrate disaster risk reduction, climate change and sustainability. Both agreed to continue to dialogue on possible areas of collaboration during the Sixty-eighth session.
