Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with Mr. Anders B. Johnsson, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

John W Ashe with Anders B. JohnssonThe President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Anders B. Johnsson, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Discussions focused on the work of the IPU and its relationship with the United Nations within the context of the Post-2015 Development Agenda process.

The IPU Secretary General highlighted the impact that national development policies will have on the elaboration of the Post-2015 Development Agenda; noting the importance of national ownership, transparency and accountability for the success of the process. He underlined how the IPU can contribute in promoting “democratic governance” and noted the Annual Parliamentary Hearing to be held at the United Nations on 14-15 November 2013.

The President outlined key intergovernmental processes and his priority areas for the elaboration of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, respective to his events taking place during the sixty-eighth session.
