Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with H. E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan. They discussed Security Council reform and Japan’s vision of the post 2015 development agenda as a framework to address global challenges such as public health, disaster prevention and women’s empowerment, based on the concept of human security.
The President of the General Assembly expressed his intent to restart intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in October, in a transparent and inclusive manner. He acknowledged Japan’s substantial contribution to the United Nations on numerous initiatives and welcomed its continued active and constructive participation in the work of the sixty-eighth session of the General Assembly.
