Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with H. E. Mr. Guido Westerwelle, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with H.E. Mr. Guido Westerwelle, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany and discussed Germany’s priorities for Security Council reform.
The Foreign Minister underscored the need for the Security Council to reflect the geo political reality of the twenty first century. He urged the President of the General Assembly to help progress intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform. President Ashe noted that Security Council reform was one of the priorities of the sixty-eighth session and informed the Foreign Minister that he intended to convene the intergovernmental working group on the matter in October.
The Foreign Minister offered Germany’s full support to President Ashe and his objectives for the sixty-eighth session. President Ashe welcomed this support and encouraged Germany to remain actively engaged and to provide its valuable input into the work of the Assembly.
