United Nations, New York, 25 September 2013
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with H.E. Mr. Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon. They discussed the positive contribution that the Secretary-General’s Summit on Climate Change could have on advancing negotiations toward a legally binding agreement on climate change in 2015. They also had an exchange on the threats to peace and security in Africa, which had resulted in the diversion of resources from development to security. President Ondimba stressed that notwithstanding national and regional efforts to address these threats, the support of the international community to security sector strengthening was imperative.
The President of the General Assembly encouraged Gabon to share its experience with the Member States of the United Nations through participation in the high level events and thematic debates scheduled for the session. He thanked President Ondimba for his support and expressed his hope that the General Assembly will be able to play an effective role during his tenure and beyond.
