COP19 UN Climate Change Conference , Warsaw 20 November 2013
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Ms. Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Discussions focused on the ongoing negotiations of the COP19/CMP9 and the subsidiary bodies, and the issues arising under the agenda item of the budget for 2014-2015.
They underlined the relationship and parallels between the climate change process toward a legally binding treaty by 2015 and that of the elaboration of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. In this context, Ms. Figueres expressed concerns regarding human capacity and financing; especially for small nations dealing with the reality of addressing the two processes in an adequate manner.
Ms. Figueres conveyed the hope that a draft agreement on climate change would be formulated ahead of the COP20/CMP10 to be held in Lima, Peru in 2014. President Ashe stressed the importance of elaborating the better part of the Post-2015 Development Agenda prior to the Summit in September 2015, and concurred with the Executive Secretary on the need for the capitalization of the Green Climate Fund well in advance of COP21/CMP11.
