Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s meeting with H. E. Mr. Vladimir Makei, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belarus

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with H.E. Mr. Vladimir Makei, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belarus. They discussed the importance of the post-2015 development agenda. The Foreign Minister underscored that the President’s theme of “The Post-2015 Development Agenda, Setting the Stage!” is crucial for the United Nations and for the world.

The Foreign Minister shared the priority areas for Belarus during the sixty-eighth session, noting its readiness to assist in the post-2015 process. The Foreign Minister stressed the importance that the government places on global partnership in the development agenda and noted as well, the important contribution of middle income countries.

He assured President Ashe of Belarus’ full support and committed his delegation to cooperate closely with the President’s office during the sixty-eighth session. President Ashe thanked the Foreign Minister for extending his support and cooperation. He welcomed the information on Belarus’ priorities and commented on the importance that successive Presidents of the General Assembly have attached to the revitalization of the General Assembly.

The President of the General Assembly expressed the hope that Belarus will actively participate in the various high-level events and thematic debates to be scheduled during his tenure and looked forward to working closely with the delegation of Belarus.
