President Ashe meets with Mr. Stavros Lambrinidis, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Stavros Lambrinidis, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights. They discussed the preparations for the post-2015 development agenda and exchanged views on the expectations for the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
President Ashe briefed Mr. Stavros Lambrinidis on the ongoing work to define the post-2015 development framework. He highlighted the upcoming high-level event dedicated to the contributions of rule of law and human rights in the post-2015 agenda which will take place in June 2014. This event will build upon consensually agreed UN political outcomes.
EUSR Lambrinidis underscored the importance of a rights-based approach in the post-2015 paradigm, encompassing all human rights. The next development agenda should integrate human rights, rule of law and maintain a strong focus on gender equality and the empowerment and rights of women and girls. He emphasized that the agenda should be universal and applicable to everyone. Mr. Lambrinidis commended President Ashe's work to set the stage for the post-2015 agenda and welcomed his decision to bring human rights and the rule of law into the broader discussion on the new sustainable development framework.
