President Ashe meets with H.E. Ms. Raimonda Murmokaitė, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations, President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of February 2014

President Ashe with H.E. Ms. Raimonda MurmokaitėThe President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with H.E. Ms. Raimonda Murmokaitė, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations, in her capacity as President of the United Nations Security Council for the month ofFebruary 2014.

The President of the Security Council briefed the President of the General Assembly on the work programme of the Security Council for the month and indicated that the Council is currently holding an open debate on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict.

The President of the Security Council underscored the importance of the topic of the Rule of Law in the Council’s deliberations, noting that an open debate on this subject is scheduled to take place on 19 February.

Discussions also covered efforts at the Security Council and within the broader UN System pertaining to the situation in Syria, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, the Revitalization of the General Assembly, and the importance of institution building for countries emerging from conflict.
