President Ashe Meets with Mr. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament. They addressed preparations for the Post-2015 Development Agenda, as well as the role of the European Parliament in support of the implementation of the global development agenda.
President Schulz reiterated the commitment of the European Union toward the realization of the Millennium Development Goals, despite challenges. He recalled the European Parliament’s ambitious approach toward supporting financing for development. He stressed the benefits for the Union itself of investing in development and stability around the world; recalling the interdependencies between prosperity, peace and development.
President Ashe called for a continuous European Union engagement in supporting the global development agenda, both politically and financially. He stressed the added value of the European Union’s development and humanitarian assistance toward ensuring stable and peaceful societies.
