President Ashe Meets with Mr. Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Environment and Sustainable Development

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Environment and Sustainable Development. They discussed the crafting and priorities of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Commissioner Potocnik acknowledged the work of the 68th session of the General Assembly toward setting the stage for the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
He recalled that the European Union supports an ambitious post-2015 agenda. Commissioner Potocnik underscored that the next agenda should build upon the Millennium Development Goals, but should integrate further the three dimensions of sustainable development – social, economic, environmental. He recalled the European Union’s support for a universal Post-2015 Development Agenda; concerning both developing and developed countries.
President Ashe informed on the work in the different fora toward the elaboration of the post-2015 agenda; including the high level and thematic debates called during the 68th General Assembly. He recalled that the eradication of extreme poverty should remain the key focus of the post-2015 agenda, thus building from the successes of the Millennium Development Goals.
