President Ashe Meets with Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. They exchanged views on the cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe, as well as on the relationships between development and human rights and rule of law.
Secretary General Jagland recalled the existing cooperation between the Council and the United Nations; emphasizing the complementary work of the two organisations in the area of human rights and rule of law. The Secretary General stressed that development is sustainable if human rights are respected. He recalled the importance given by the member countries of the Council of Europe to social and economic rights, which were challenged by the economic crisis.
President Ashe outlined current efforts being undertaken toward the elaboration of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. He stressed the relevance of addressing inequalities; an issue which proves to be relevant for both developing and developed countries. President Ashe highlighted the importance of the Council of Europe’s participation in the June High-level event on Human Rights and the Rule of Law.
