President Ashe Meets with Ms. Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe met today with Ms. Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action. Commissioner Hedegaard briefed the President on the recent discussions of the European Commission in which a target of reduction in domestic greenhouse gases of 40 percent below 1990 levels, by 2030 has been outlined in the new European Union framework on climate and energy.
President Ashe commended the European Union on the proposed target and underlined that this would be a significant signal to others coming into the United Nations Secretary-General’s Climate Summit to be held on 23 September 2014 in New York.
Commissioner Hedegaard noted the need within the negotiations on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for a discussion on the form and architecture of the 2015 agreement and stressed the importance that the European Union places on target setting
