President Ashe Meets with Mrs. Kristalina GeorgievaThe President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mrs. Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. They discussed the links between humanitarian action and development. Commissioner Georgieva provided a comprehensive presentation of the European Union’s humanitarian mechanism; highlighting the close cooperation with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Commissioner Georgieva called for more international coordination on humanitarian assistance and action. She underlined the role played by the humanitarian community in implementing early recovery measures. She emphasized the European Union’s best practices in mobilizing resources and assets for disaster response. The European Commissioner underscored the importance of an increased capacity of the international community to prevent crisis; including through early warning systems.

President Ashe acknowledged the European Union’s response to humanitarian crisis around the globe, praising the action and financial support for humanitarian relief. He outlined preparations for setting the groundwork for the Post-2015 Development Agenda and highlighted the importance of considering the particular development needs of countries in situations of fragility.
