President Ashe Meets with Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Mr. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. They discussed the elaboration of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, as well as preparations for upcoming climate change events and the European Union (EU)-United Nations (UN) cooperation. President Barroso praised the good EU-UN cooperation; emphasizing the commonalities of the two organisations’ priorities and agendas. He referred to the importance given by the European Union for a smooth transition from the Millennium Development Goals to a more comprehensive agenda, covering the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.
President Barroso highlighted the importance of human rights and rule of law in the context of the post-2015 goals. He emphasized the links between the preparation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the ongoing climate change negotiations. He recalled that the European Commission proposed new goals and targets for European Union’s climate and energy policies up to 2030, which will be discussed and agreed to by EU Member States.
President Ashe commended the European Union’s role on the international stage and acknowledged the leadership of the Union and its Members States on climate change. He expressed trust that the European Union will remain engaged in supporting the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the climate change processes.
