The President of the General Assembly, H. E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with H.E. Mr. Gerard Araud, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, in his capacity as the current President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of December 2013.
The President of the Security Council briefed President Ashe on the Programme of Work of the Security Council for the month, including consultations on mediation; the consideration of a resolution on the Central African Republic; a report to be presented by the Secretary-General and the President of the World Bank on a recent joint tour of the Sahel; a briefing by the Director General of UNESCO on the situation of journalists, particularly those serving in conflict areas; a briefing on Drug Trafficking in the Sahel and West Africa; and consultations on the Middle East.
President Ashe briefed the Security Council President on the status of efforts to resume discussions on Security Council reform within the Intergovernmental Negotiations process of the General Assembly.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the principal organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes, in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the UN Charter.
