Meeting with the President of the United Nations Security Council

President Ashe meets with the President of the Security Council H.H. Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with the President of the United Nations Security Council, H.H. Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein. The President of the Security Council briefed the President of the General Assembly on the work programme of the Security Council for the month of January which had thus far addressed the situation in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Sudan and South Sudan.

The President of the Security Council shared his outlook for further work to be conducted during his tenure as President, including the convening of an open debate on War, its lessons, and the search for a permanent peace. Jordan joined the Council on 1 January 2014, as a non-permanent member, along with Chad, Chile, Lithuania and Nigeria.


 

Meeting with the President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Ashe, met today with the President of the Economic and Social Council, H.E. Mr. Martin Sajdik. Discussions honed in on the preparations for the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) under the auspices of ECOSOC slated for September. The President of ECOSOC identified the need for both Presidents and respective offices to work together during the transition period between 2014 and 2015.

The President of ECOSOC noted the importance of the successful organization of the Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) in July, as a way to maintain the momentum for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and to identify areas where action can be further supported. The President of ECOSOC also made note of the Development Cooperation Forum (DCF), as the third priority. He outlined that the July DCF will provide a critical occasion for the broader UN membership to reflect on the financing of a Post-2015 Development Agenda

The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the UN Charter.
