President Ashe meets with H.E. Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. John W. Ashe, met today with Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairsof the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They discussed the growing success of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), as well as a range of development, humanitarian and political issues.
Dr. Gargash outlined some areas of social progress in the UAE, including efforts to increase women's empowerment, strengthen the education system and improve broader access to health coverage. He made note of ongoing challenges related to foreign labor and labor laws.Dr. Gargash further highlighted the importance of peaceful and stable societies; namely in the Middle East region, and their direct impact and influence on ensuring progress toward sustainable development in the context of the elaboration of a Post-2015 Development Agenda.
Dr. Gargash expressed concern for the humanitarian crisis in Syria and issues related to the Arab Spring, along with UAE's growingdevelopmental cooperation with Africa.
