Death of Hugo Chavez, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

 

NEW YORK (6 March 2013) – The President of the General Assembly is saddened by the death of H.E. Mr. Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.  He offers his sincerest condolences to the family of the President, the Government and the people of Venezuela.

President Chávez was a leader, who remained committed, at all times, to social justice and improving the lives of the citizens of Venezuela, especially the most underprivileged.

Throughout his political career, he championed regional integration in Latin America and was the driving force behind the creation of the Community of Latin-American and Caribbean States (CLACS).

The President of the General Assembly renews his commitment to continue working with the representatives of the Venezuelan Government at the General Assembly to strengthen the three pillars of the United Nations: Peace and Security, Human Rights and Development.
