STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON FOR
THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
United Nations, New York, 30 September 2011
On the International Day of Non-Violence
On this day proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2007 as the International Day of Non-Violence, I encourage all Member States, UN entities and civil society organizations to re-affirm their commitment to the noble objectives of promoting tolerance and non-violence. The UN Charter identifies non-violence as an important principle guiding our work. By commemorating this day every year on October 2nd, The General Assembly reaffirms this message of tolerance and non-violence, and encourages Member States to settle their disputes by peaceful means.
