President of the General Assembly meets with the new President of the Security Council
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser today met with H.E. Baso Sangqu, Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations, in his current capacity as the new President of the Security Council for the month of January 2012.
The President of the Security Council briefed President Al-Nasser on the progress of work of the Security Council programme for the month of January which included debates on UN-AU partnership and Justice and the Rule of Law.
The two Presidents discussed a wide range of issues including the situation in Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and the Middle East. They also tackled the global economic crisis and the role of the General Assembly.
Meets with the new President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
President Al-Nasser also held talks today with H.E. Mr. Milos Koterec, Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations, in his capacity as the 68th President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The President of ECOSOC briefed President Al-Nasser on the priorities on the agenda of ECOSOC this year. On his part, the President of the General Assembly highlighted the key issues on the agenda of the 66th session of the General Assembly with special focus on mediation and sustainable development.
In addition, they discussed the global economic and financial issue and the revitalization of the General Assembly.
The two Presidents exchanged views on strengthening the role of ECOSOC and means of cooperation between the General Assembly and ECOSOC.
