President of the General Assembly meets with the Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkey

President of the General Assembly H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al- Nasser held talks today in Istanbul with H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister of Turkey and H.E. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu .

Discussions with Prime Minister Erdogan, covered the latest developments in Syria, against the backdrop of Friday's meeting in Tunisia of the Friends of Syria. In that context, President Al- Nasser commended Turkey for its leading mediation role in the region. They also tackled a wide range of issues including, the revitalization of the General Assembly and Security Council reform, strengthening the alliance of civilization and the upcoming High Level Meetings that President Al-Nasser is convening at the UN General Assembly in New York.

In his talks with Foreign Minister Davutoglu, President Al-Nasser re-iterated that the meeting of the Friends of Syria in Tunisia and the appointment of Former UN Secretary-General Assembly Kofi Annan as Joint Special Envoy to Syria, demonstrates the willingness and commitment of the international community to work together to resolve the crisis in Syria. He welcomed the offer of Government of Turkey to host a second meeting on Syria next month.

On his part, Foreign Minister Davutoglu commended President Al-Nasser for his leadership at the General Assembly, alluding to the recent resolution on Syria adopted by the General Assembly on February 16th, 2012.

At a joint press conference with the Foreign Minister, they both urged the Syrian government to accept immediately a plan proposed by the League of Arab States that aims at ending all acts of violence against civilians in Syria.

The President of the General Assembly is in an official visit to Turkey taking part in Istanbul Conference on Mediation, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

On the margins of the conference, President Al-Nasser joined Foreign Minister Davutoglu in an interactive simulation session with the students of The Faculty of International Relations at Sabanci University.
