Statement of the President of the General Assembly on Libya

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, has been closely monitoring reports of the latest developments in Libya.

The President of the General Assembly hopes that following these developments, Libya will witness peace, security and national unity and will achieve the process of democratization and freedom that is being pursued by the Libyan people.

He urges all Libyans to unite at this critical juncture to reconstruct their country through a process based on reconciliation, justice, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.

President Al-Nasser expresses his sincere condolences to all those Libyans who have lost their loved ones.

The President of the General Assembly encourages all Member States of the United Nations to continue offering support and assistance to the Libyan people and their leadership at their request in the reconstruction and stabilization efforts of the country with full respect to the country’s national ownership.

In keeping with the topic “Sustainable development and global prosperity”, one of the President’s key focus areas for the 66th session of the General Assembly, President Al-Nasser reaffirms that democratic transformation in Libya will need to be coupled with economic transformation that will raise the living standards and create sustained job growth. In this respect, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya has a crucial role to assist and support Libyan national efforts.
