President Al Nasser meets with the Foreign Minister of Italy


President of the General Assembly, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, met with Mr. Franco Frattini, Foreign Minister of Italy. Their discussions covered a wide array of issues ranging from the Security Council Reform to the Middle East peace process and the situation in the Arab world.

On Security Council Reform, President Al- Nasser reiterated that Security Council reform is one of the most important issues on the UN agenda.

On the role of the UN in supporting Arab aspirations in the wake of the Arab Spring, Mr. Frattini said that Italy stands ready to contribute to the reconstruction efforts in Libya.


Meeting with the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria


President of the General Assembly, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, also met today with the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov.

They discussed the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question, the Arab Spring, and the importance of the work of the current session of General Assembly.

The President of the General Assembly highlighted the four priorities of his tenure:  Mediation, UN Reform, Enhancing Disaster Preparedness and Coordination and Sustainable Development.

President Al-Nasser and Foreign Minister Mladenov also discussed possible areas where the Government of Bulgaria could assist in furthering the work of the United Nations.

 

Meeting with the President of Slovenia


His Excellency, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al Nasser, President of General Assembly also met with H.E. Mr. Danilo Turq, President of Slovenia. President Al-Nasser outlined the four main pillars on the agenda of the 66th session of the General Assembly and they both discussed the situation in the Middle East, the Arab Spring and Security Council reform.

 

Meeting with the Foreign Minister of Egypt


President of the General Assembly also met with Mr. Mohamed Kamel Amr,  Foreign Minister of Egypt.

They discussed a number of regional issues, focusing mainly on the situation in the Middle East and the Arab world.  President Al-Nasser highlighted the four pillars on top of the agenda of the 66th session of the General Assembly, namely: Mediation and the peaceful settlement of disputes; UN Revitalization and Reform; Improving Disaster prevention and responses; and Sustainable development. Security Council Reform was also brought up in their discussions.


Meeting with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)


On the margins of the high-level meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases on Monday morning, President of the General Assembly, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, also held discussions with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab.

They discussed ways of strengthening the current cooperation between the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, with the President of the General Assembly pledging his support for the IPU-organised Parliamentary Briefing scheduled for Wednesday, 21 September, under the theme of peace mediation. 

The two officials further discussed preparations for the IPU’s upcoming two-day Parliamentary Hearing in the General Assembly on November 28 and 29 this year, under the title:  “Strengthening political accountability for a more peaceful and prosperous world.”   

President Al-Nasser and Dr. Guribab also discussed the Millennium Development Goals, especially those dealing with universal education, gender equality and childhood plus maternal mortality.
