President of the General Assembly has audience with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, today had an audience with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, at the Vatican.
President Al-Nasser discussed with Pope Benedict XVI, matters related to interfaith and cross cultural dialogues as crucial components for building peace, tolerance, harmony and mutual understanding around the world.
The President of the General Assembly briefed His Holiness The Pope on the High-Level Thematic Debate on Fostering Cross-Cultural Understanding and the High-level Meeting on Mediation, which he convened at the General Assembly in March and May in New York.
President Al-Nasser expressed his strong belief that with growing global cultural challenges, the role of the Alliance of Civilizations has become more relevant. In that context, he referred to the Fourth Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, held in Doha in December 2011 which focused on the relevance of cultural diversity to development.
The talks between the President of the General Assembly and The Pope also touched on the latest developments in the Middle East, especially the situation in Syria, the Palestinian question as well as Somalia and other global humanitarian issues.
