STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON FOR
THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
United Nations, New York, 12 June 2012
On the Continued Killings, Reported Massacres and Violence in Syria
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, remains deeply concerned about the continued killings, reported massacres and violence in Syria, especially in Al-Houlah, Al-Qubeir and recently in Al-Haffa.
This ongoing violence is reprehensible, especially the reported torture and killing of women and children, as well as the systematic slaughtering of entire families.
The President of the General Assembly calls on the Syrian authorities and all other parties to grant safe and unhindered access to the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria, (UNSMIS), and also to all UN humanitarian and human rights personnel who are working to assist the affected communities, in accordance with international law and commitments made in this regard.
President Al-Nasser reiterates his call on all parties of the Syrian crisis, especially the Government, to cease all military operations and violent attacks immediately, and protect its civilians in accordance with its legal responsibilities.
The President of the General Assembly further urges all Member States of the United Nations to redouble their support for Mr. Annan and his team for the implementation of UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/66/253 and relevant UN Security Council and League of Arab States resolutions.
