President of the General Assembly meets with H.E. Senator Bob Carr, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser met today with H.E. Sen. Bob Carr, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia.
They discussed issues relevant to the Thematic Debate on Disaster Risk Reduction that President Al-Nasser is convening tomorrow, 12th of April with the participation of Sen. Carr. They both agreed on the necessity of integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into the Rio+20 process and highlighted the importance of supporting developing countries’ participation in Rio. President Al-Nasser commended the commitment and contribution of Australia in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction.
The talks also focused on issues of mutual concern, including mediation and the preparations for the informal High-level meeting on Mediation the President plans to convene on 23 May, 2012 here in New York.
They also exchanged views on the recent developments concerning the Syrian crisis.
Both the President and the Senator reiterated their strong support for fostering interfaith dialogue, and discussed the need to strengthen the Alliance of Civilizations, including through increased resources.
They also discussed the upcoming High-level Thematic Debate on the State of the World Economy which President Al-Nasser will convene at the GA on 17-18 May, 2012.
The President thanked the Foreign Minister for Australia’s recent pledge of $200,000 to the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for the Victims of Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children.
